City Information
Nice is a city in southern France on the Mediterranean coast. The city is nicknamed Nice la Belle (Nissa la Bella in Niçard), which means Nice the Beautiful. It is the capital of the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur), the 5th largest city of France with a population of 348,721 in 2007 and the four-largest urban area after those of Paris, Lyon and Marseille with a population of 955,000. First popularized by English aristocrats in the eighteenth century, Nice reached its zenith in the belle époque of the late nineteenth century, an era that left the city with several extraordinary architectural flights of fancy. Nice has all the advantages of a major city: superb culture, wonderful street life and excellent shopping, eating and drinking, all set against a backdrop of blue skies, sparkling sea and sub-tropical greenery kept lush by sprinklers.
